Face Blind by Rory McFadyen.

Face blindness may affect up to 2.5% of the population and I am not good at recognizing unfamiliar faces or meeting people out of context. The title of this novel attracted me, so I downloaded a copy.

This novel has three central characters, Ethan a security guard, London a college professor who has face blindness and his wife Jane. The story is set in California during 2008. Character development is okay and I develop an empathy with London because of his face blindness. Readers without face blindness may not have empathy for London and view him as a poor husband who is only interested in his work. His wife Jane comes across as quite loose and Ethan is a sad loser.

All three characters do their best to deal with life as this novel rumbles along. It is not an exciting read and is easy to put down. The plot is unrealistic and you wonder if people in real life would really bother to get involved like this. Face blindness is only addressed three times during the story and it is not the focus of this novel. It is more about relationships and cultural identity. The back story to each character is very good but how they perform in 2008 is a let down. The story starts off good but steadily goes downhill all the way to the end. The ending is whimsical but leaves you with a feeling of loss.

Face Blind is a disappointing read that offers little pleasure for the reader with only tiny bits of humour thrown in. I got to the end and thought it was not worth my time reading it. I took very little away from this novel and think it is a poor read that I can only vote 2 stars. Rory has failed to entertain or enlighten me with his novel that lacks a punch.

Face Blind is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2014.

The Essene Conspiracy by S. Eric Wachtel.

This novel is set in 1991 and involves a plot by a secret Jewish religious group to further their cause. Conspiracies are my favourite book genre and this novel will be popular with fans of Dan Brown. It has religion, some symbolism, a rich historical detail and a race against time to save the day.

The author goes into great detail about Jewish culture and heritage so that the reader can understand the passion held by these Orthodox Jewish fanatics. You can enter their world and learn how their beliefs differ from those of other Jews living in Israel.

The plot rolls along at a good pace as little bits add up giving you a realistic scenario. As an Atheist, I found the religious parts of this novel very funny! I do not think this was the author’s intention but it did give me a lot of reading pleasure.

As conspiracy novels go, this novel is quite run of the mill. What is different is the amount of culture involved and the historical context. We all have our views on the Six Day War but the author weaves this history very cleverly into his story.

The ending of this book is very average but the political context is very good. The thoughts of any religious fanatics pursuing their own agenda and treating life so cheap and disposable is very creepy indeed. I enjoyed reading The Essene Conspiracy a great deal, it is not the most original of novels but it does the job. It taught me a lot about Jewish culture that I was ignorant of before reading this story and I view this book as a good read that I will vote 4 stars.

Devil by J. Paul Stephens.

Devil is a novelette about Magdalene, a 22 year old girl and James, her lover.

This book starts off okay about a couple having an adult relationship. Then it becomes rather odd and stretches the reader's belief. This is followed by supernatural scenes leaving you more confused about this book's direction. When I got to the end I thought "what the devil was this all about"?

I got little reading pleasure from this book as I felt I was being led up the garden path. I did not like it's structure or the writing style. It started off okay with a little promise but slowly went downhill. The ending was very poor and just left me feeling disappointed. Devil misses the mark, I will vote it only 2 stars and I suggest you give it the MISS.

Correcting the Army Brat by Lexi Darrow.

This short story about Taylor, an 18 year old girl and her stepfather who is a Sergeant. He considers her to be an Army Brat who may need some fatherly guidance.

For a short story the introduction is rather long as Lexi sets the scene around the military base. Then the Sergeant confronts Taylor about her absence from home and the fun begins. It is not a realistic scenario but is a sexy nonsense. The fantasies are regular and the sex is normal. There is nothing unusual about this tale but it does raise a smile as a coffee time read. As short erotic stories go, this one is an okay read that I will vote 3 stars.

Correcting the Army Brat is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2014.

A Beautiful Chaos by Rebecca Moorestorms.

Meet Sammie Woods, a 16 year old girl with bipolar disorder living in North Carolina. This novel is about her struggle with her home, parents and school while she tries to cope with her illness.

A Beautiful Chaos is a powerful story that is focused on Sammie and I quickly developed an empathy for her. Sammie gets the reader on-side because she tries to do the best in challenging circumstances despite her normal teenage rebelliousness. This novel takes the reader through an alarming journey as Sammie struggles with her medication, abuse at home and problems at school. As her emotions rage, she sees a light at the end of her tunnel, a potential boyfriend called Cody Shadows who has special needs.

Rebecca goes into great detail about the drugs available and what it is like to live with bipolar disorder. You ride the rollercoaster of highs and lows begining to wonder, just like Sammie, if the drugs actually help.

I enjoyed reading this book as it gave me the chance to dip into another world and mindset. Rebecca does warn readers that some of the content may risk triggering vulnerable readers - but this is a realistic and hard hitting story. The pace is good and characterization is spot on. I really got to feel for Sammie and her father. Although this novel is aimed at the Young Adult market, older generations should enjoy it too. It was a shame that the finished book was not proof-read and the errors interupted the smooth flow of the story. However, this is a good read and deserves 4 stars.

Autism - A Practical Guide for Parents by Alan Yau.

Alan Yau has worked as a teacher and has been involved in helping children with autism spectrum disorder for 20 years. In this book he offers advice to parents so that they can help their child.

Before reading this book, I knew nothing about autism. Boys are 4 times more likely to have autism than girls. About 1 in 88 children in America are now identified as having autism. People with autism have difficulties in three areas, known as "the triad of impairments": social interaction, social communication and rigidity in thinking. There is currently no cure for autism - and many individuals would argue that they don't need to be cured.

I found this book a wonderful eye opener. It let's you into the mind of the child with autism, so that you can experience the world from their point of view. Alan has written a great book that is very easy to understand. He appears to be a great teacher and really knows how peoples' minds actually work, whether the person has autism or not. This book is a great mixture of theory, problem solving and case studies. Because each aspect of autism covered ends with a case study, you really understand how peoples' brains are wired and how they feel. I found the mindset of autism so very easy to relate to.

I am not the parent of a child with autism but my day job is a coach driver for National Express. Passengers with autism do not wear a badge to alert the driver but can have a distressing journey because of the ways our industry works and how frequently things change. Reading this book has really helped me to understand the mindset of passengers who I will unknowingly meet every working day.

I really enjoyed reading this book and Alan is clearly an expert in his field. His talents as an author are great, the structure of this guide is spot on and he explains everything really well, so it does not matter if you knew nothing about autism beforehand. I can find nothing wrong with this book and I learned a great deal. I found this guide a very good read and it get's the top score of 5 stars from me.

Valley of the Dolls by Gerard Harrison.

This is a short story about Jackie Thorn, a 26 year old African American who has just left her boyfriend and drives away in the hope of starting a new life. She calls into a diner in Greensboro, North Carolina where she meets Clayton Powell, a middle aged white guy. From here this short story moves to the Valley of the Dolls.

This is actually a horror story that slowly develops as things are just not right. Gerard's writing quality is good and this is an enjoyable read. I quickly developed an empathy for Jackie and although there are only 2 characters in this story, it is not a dull tale. The pace is steady and it does entertain all the way to the end.

Within the constraints of a short story, Valley of the Dolls does it's job and succeeds in being an okay read that I will vote 3 stars.

Valley of the Dolls is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 1996.

Kindle Unlimited by Bryan Woolrich.

This short guide is all about the Kindle Unlimited subscription service where you pay £7.99 a month to have access to over 700,000 eBooks. The author introduces the workings of eBooks and the Amazon Kindle before going onto mention the pros and cons of the subscription service.

However, you gain extremely little from reading this guide. The pros the author mentions are simply the 700,000 eBooks and the cons that the service is only available in your country. He actually states it is only available in America but looking at the UK Amazon website, it states the £7.99 offer is only available in Britain.

This short guide does not do the subscription service justice. It eBooks in the Kindle store, only a selection of lower priced eBooks.

This short guide is nothing more than an advert published by an amateur. You are better off spending your time surfing the Amazon website to decide if this subscription service is right for you. This guide will not help you choose and brings nothing to the debate on this service. This guide is rubbish and I must vote it only 1 star and suggest you give it the MISS.

A Touch of Autumn by Evie Hunter.

This is an erotic short story set in a fetish club in Paris. Sinead O'Sullivan is playing around with Niall Moore and they are both having fun. But there is more to this story than their relationship as they interact with the other guests.

This short story is different because of the sub plots involving the other characters. But it is not an exciting read. The writing is clear and articulate but the story telling is poor. It does not shine in any area and is a disappointing read. This is not a very erotic tale and you will get more thrills from walking around Asda. The sex is rather tame and will not upset a Grandmother.

I got very little pleasure from reading this short story and found it a POOR read which I can only vote 2 stars. Eileen Gormley and Caroline McCall work together under the pen name of Evie Hunter and I do not think their team work has brought anything to the erotic short story genre.

A Touch of Autumn is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2013.

Silence in the house by Natasha A. Salnikova

Lana is in an abusive relationship with her husband Spike. She suffers this domestic violence for a number of years then gets the courage to leave and buy a house to live on her own. Only there are some problems she must wrestle with in her new home.

Silence in the house is a cross-genre novel, it has a domestic violence survivor tale, supernatural encounters and romance. This is a run-of-the-mill novel and is nothing special. It is an easy book to put down and the writing is very middle-of-the-road. There is no WOW! factor and this is not a gripping story. It is easy reading and I developed an empathy for the characters. The pace is okay and the supernatural things are rather odd. The book has a happy ending and WITHOUT giving anything away, dog owners will then make sense of the supernatural bits, even an Atheist like me!

Silence in the house is an okay read, so I will vote it the middle score of 3 stars.

Silence in the house is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2014.

Refuge by N. G. Osborne.

I started reading this book and straight away I felt "at home". I was very impressed with how it felt so familiar and like a pair of old slippers. It was almost like chatting to an old friend.

This novel starts off during 1981 in Kabul as Noor and her family flee Afghanistan when the Russians invade. They become refugees and move to Peshawar in Pakistan. The book then moves onto 1991 and she meets Charlie Matthews, an American aid worker. From here this novel becomes very cross-genre.

Refuge is a mixture of historical fiction, politics, culture, religion, land mine clearance, refugee camps and romance. This mixture works well and makes for an enjoyable read. I liked the context of the story and getting the full picture. It was a good book to escape into and I liked how all the background and information was woven into the story, so that readers who are not experts on Afghanistan and Pakistan, can understand the problems involved.

There is a lot of action in this novel but no sex to upset your grandmother. The plot is a little convenient to make the story work but this is a good daily read. The quality of writing and character development is good. There is a warmth that comes through which is very similar to the news reports filed about the Middle East by Robert Fisk for the Independent newspaper. It was this warmth among the poverty, politics, jihad, struggle and violence that made me feel so "at home". Osborne ticks all the boxes for an intelligent, informative and entertaining read. Although I did NOT like the ending, this is still a top score 5 star read. It will make you think before you run after a football!

Diabetes Cure in 30 seconds - Say Good Bye to Diabetes and Live a Healthy Life by Dr. Samantha Robert.

Diabetes is sweeping across the western world through ignorance. This short guide could help you to avoid becoming a victim to diabetes.

I found this short guide helpful as it packs a lot of data and figures for you to gauge your risk. The way the body works with sugars etc. is very complicated but this guide does the maths for you in your gamble against this disease. I found this book easy to understand because Samantha builds her strategy together in a logical way. She is not vague with values like low or high but quotes exact figures so you can make an informed decision on your risk and treatment.

I am pleased I downloaded a copy because you only get one chance in life. We all like our food and drink but it is so easy to sleepwalk into diabetes. Hopefully this book will give readers the chance to change before it is too late. This short guide is a good, clear read that gets to the heart of the problem and I will gladly vote it 4 stars.

Bare Down There: Shaved Pink And Big Breasts by Allison Reims.

Beth and Jack have been dating for a couple of months. Jack wants Beth to shave her pubic hair but she does not want to until one day when she wants to give him a surprise.

What follows is a poorly written short story of vanilla sex. I got the impression it was written by a teenager who wrongly thought she was ticking all the boxes. There is no characterization and her short story reads like a report of a football match. Touch, touch, stroke, stroke, push, push and Goal! Don't be mislead by the title, it is not about the joys of shaved pubic hair and how it brings a brightness and freshness to your daily life.  Nor does it describe the sensation of shaving, the razor cuts and the tautness of your skin.

Bare Down There is very poor soft porn. It is not an erotic tale and you will have more fun watching dogs in the park. This is not a unique tale, it is so ordinary and boring. Nothing is unusual and her writing syle is cheap. As a coffee time read you should concentrate on your coffee as this short story will leave you cold. This is one to AVOID so I will only vote it 1 tiny star.

Bare Down There is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2014.

Pagan Eyes: Revelation by Rayna Noire.

Nora is a rape victim and she is also a witch. This is an unusual novel set in the present day and it is cross-genre. It is a mixture of rape crisis, present day social commentary, religious intolerance, harrassment, romance and old fashioned magic.

Pagan Eyes is a good read that draws the reader into Nora's world. The characterization of Nora is full on and I quickly dropped my dislike for childish magical nonsense and developed an empathy for her. Because of the high quality of Rayna's writing, adults can ignore the fantasy/magical elements of this novel and simply enjoy those bits as a dream.

Pagan Eyes is an enjoyable every day read and I became grabbed into this other world lived by Nora. It has a quirky mix of present day urban reality and a supernatural world. I particularly enjoyed the chapters when Nora is working as a short order cook in a diner. The workplace dynamics seemed very real, so much so that I had a dream one night that I had given up my job as a coach driver for National Express and became a short order cook myself!

Special praise should given to how rape victims cope with their trauma and try to move on with their lives. Nora tries to make herself less attractive to men and develops various ways to keep out of men's way. Her tale is told in a matter of fact way and not like those sickly, sympathy seeking, hard luck stories told on television talent shows like the X Factor.

Pagan Eyes works on many levels to become a good read that I will happily vote 4 stars. This story has a happy ending and Nora finds her soul mate.

Pagan Eyes is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2014.

Outro by Michael J. Vaughn.

Outro is a term used in karaoke when the words stop and the music plays on giving the singer the option of walking off stage or waiting by the mike. This novel is about 2 people who meet at a karaoke bar. The central character is Channy, the karaoke jock and she is supported by Ruby who comes along to sing. There are other people involved in this story along the way, which has a happy ending.

Outro is an unusual novel as it does NOT fit into a genre. Michael has written a lovely story that is simply a joy to read. When you go away on holiday, you often befriend strangers, who over time you get to know rather well. Outro is very much like making friends on holiday. Michael is very good at characterization and gradually the people open up to you with their back stories. It is all about people drifting through the karaoke bar and their life experiences.

As the characters give each other more trust you learn about their troubles and how they try to move on. What makes this so enjoyable is the freshness of Michael's writing. You get the impression that you are meeting these people for the first time and are enjoying a holiday with them. Empathy grows strongly and this novel shows the good side to human nature and the value of friendship.

Michael's narrative is very good, so much so that you feel as though you are living with his characters. Outro is a refreshing read that appeals because of it's realism and use of ordinary, non glamourous characters. This girl-next-door style gives this book a credibility that makes it a good read that I will vote 4 stars.

The Innocent by Harlan Coben.

Matt Hunter got into a fight and ended up serving 4 years in jail. But his bad luck does not end there as this thriller reveals.

I really enjoyed reading The Innocent which is all about people trying to recover from bad luck. They try to move on from the bad things that have happened but it is a struggle. Harlan gives you the full story with lots of atmosphere and social commentary. His characterization is spot on and you very quickly develop an empahty for Matt. You learn about all the characters aspirations and the highs and lows of living in New Jersey.

The plot is very involved and there is a high level of important detail. The writing quality is top notch and this novel covers a lot of ground. It is an entertaining read with no dull sections. It is great how everything fits together and leaves you with a BUZZ! at the end. I can find nothing wrong with this book, it was simply a pleasure to read, so I will vote it the top score of 5 stars.

In my day job driving a coach for National Express, I often get passengers trying to board at the last second. I know these passengers show up just as the coach is leaving because they have a dodgy ticket and think I will just accept it in the rush to get away! But I see beyond this scam and am very cautious with the presented ticket. Matt Hunter tries this trick on page 365...

... He remembered something Bernie had sent him by e-mail several years ago. It said:

Here's a fun test. Read this sentence:

FINISHED FILES ARE THE RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC STUDY COMBINED WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS.

Now count the F's in that sentence.
He had done it and ended up with four. The real answer was six. You don't see every letter. That's not how we're built. He was counting on something like that here. Hunter, Huntler. Would someone really catch the difference?

The Innocent has 439 pages and was written in 2005.

Saffina Desforges Presents... The Kindle Coffee-Break Collection Vol. 2.

This eBook is the second collection of short stories selected by Saffina. They are a diverse range of nine stories that could be ideal for a refreshing coffee time read. Sadly this is NOT the case and this collection disappoints. These aspiring, new and independent authors do not have the knack of telling a good short story. They do not have the sharpness or focus required for a good coffee time read.

I read story after story and became quite bored until the last. After eight VERY POOR short stories I read The Agent by Mark Williams. This was a refreshing change and I rather enjoyed the dead-pan humour employed by Mark. The irony is that Mark is Saffina's partner, so it is no surprise that his writing is GOOD. But even a brilliant end from Mark does not save this collection which I can only vote 1 star and I suggest you AVOID.

No Second Chance by Harlan Coben.

Marc Seidman wakes up in ICU to find his wife has been murdered and his baby daughter, Tara, has vanished.

This story is NOT hot off the press as Harlan wrote this novel in 2003. Does this 391 page crime thriller seem out of date, reading it 11 years after it was first published? NO! this book is a stonking good read and it DOES NOT show it's age. What you get is a first class read that fully entertains you from start to finish. No Second Chance is a FULL story will loads of detail and lots of twists and turns. It is all about secrets in peoples' past that raise their ugly heads to cause problems that are a big challenge to work around. Follow Marc as his secrets are slowly reveiled to the reader but he is not the only one with a murky past. This is not just a regular crime thriller but a look into how people deal with life's challenges in a way that they think is right, at the time.

No Second Chance is a big story with a huge list of little details that all fit together. The planning of the plot lines are the work of genius. The pleasure I got from reading such a complicated plot was tremendous. Harlan is an author at the top of his game. I can find nothing wrong with this book at all. If you want to give a book away to someone to get them interested in reading books as a hobby, this fits the bill! Harlan is an author who does not let the reader down with poor, follow on novels. There is only one vote I can give No Second Chance, the top score of 5 stars.

The Encyclopedia of George Carlin Jokes - Compiled by Mike Nelson.

George Carlin was an American stand-up comedian who died in 2008. This book details his best 302 jokes.

I do not remember George Carlin and his comedy was not broadcast much in the UK. So I read this book with fresh eyes and an open mind. When I got to the end, I was disappointed. I did not enjoy reading this book and I found it a chore. His humour is typical of a stand-up comedian, lots of ranting about everyday frustations. There is nothing special about his humour, George was not unique, just another American comedian playing the underdog. Okay, there were a few bits that made me smile but nothing made me laugh out loud. His humour is very similar to another dead American comedian, Bill Hicks.

The structure employed by Mike Nelson for this book is okay and you get the feeling that you may have been a fan following George for many years. But you can't get any atmosphere of the gigs from this book. It is just a transcript, so you have no idea of tone, accent, timing and body language. These 4 key elements of comedy brighten up any performance and make the gig work. Reading a transcript in this fashion gives you as much character as a telephone directory.

As a book this does not work. Whatever good work George performed does not translate into this book of quotes. There is very little reading pleasure to be gained from this book and any talent George had, has been lost within these pages. This book is NOT a good read and I can only vote it 1 star.

Night of the Pentagram by Barrymore Tebbs.

Elizabeth finds her husband Sven murdered in their home in Los Angeles and a Pentagram is drawn on the wall in his own blood. Elizabeth has to cope with his violent death and this is her tale. Night of the Pentagram is a thriller with a WOW! factor.

This is a good book and I enjoyed reading it. There is a good range of diverse characters and the story has a steady pace. From the start you have your suspicions about peoples' motives and who may not be telling the truth. Character development is good and you get carried away with the story. Then your head begins to spin as some things do not appear to add up. Suddenly you get to the end and you think WOW! - that was clever. Then all the little bits add up and you understand Elizabeth's tale apart from the goat!

Barrymore Tebbs has put a lot of thought into the structure of this novel. It has a very clever plot that makes you wonder all the way to the end. Then you think, ah! I missed that clue didn't I. What you have not missed is a very good novel that really makes you think and wonder at the end. It is an entertaining read that gives pleasure even if you were expecting a regular crime thriller. It is one of those books that retain a resonance in your head when you have finished it. Therefore I am going to vote it the top score of 5 stars.

My multi-story tale of NCP Car Park hell by Andrew Culture.

This short story is a right of passage tale of the frustrations of British urban life. It is told in the first person of one man's late night parking problems. The setting is Catford, a part of south east London in the summer of 2007.

As short stories go, this one is POOR. I did not develop an empathy for the character as he did not display much street awareness. We can get man on the moon and men trek across hazardous mountains. To spend the night in an urban multi storey car park is NOT a life changing experience.

This short story is a demonstration of one man's grudge against a large nationwide company. It provides LITTLE reading pleasure and is no better than reading a rant on many of the blogs on the internet. The ideal forum for this short story would be on one of the many whistle blower blogs that are still active.

The writing style was your average man in the street which added to it's credibility. But there was NOTHING sharp to this story and it lacked bite. It fell below the standard of many weekly womens' magazines and the author did NOT show promise. As a short.story I consider this a FAIL and shall only vote it 2 stars. I suggest you give it a MISS as there are far better stories out there on the market. As a long standing milestone against NCP, it DOES it's job!

The Lake by Steven F. Galloway.

This mystery novel is set in Cornwall as Esther has to move away from London and live with her Auntie. Cornish village life is quite a shock for Esther but she adapts to her new home and makes the best of things.

The Lake is not the best of mysteries and it has one of my pet hates. This novel has 20 chapters, 16 are set in 2009 but woven between the whole story are 4 chapters that flashback to 1977. This is rather annoying!

Steven tries to develop a mystery surrounding the village lake by raising suspicions about it's history, hence the 1977 chapters and a locked room in the Aunties cottage. But this mystery is quite shallow as Steven gives you the links in the mystery without you having to think too hard. The odd things add up so easily that the mystery is no real surprise. The inclusion of an unusual tattoo is like a red flag to a bull.

The story rolls on and I became less interested as the chapters went by. Then we have some supernatural nonsense to bring the story to a close. The Lake did not do much for me and I can only vote it 2 stars. I suggest you give The Lake a MISS and look elsewhere.

The Lake is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2011.

1 Hour Guide to Mastering Evernote by Albert N. Thomas.

This very focused guide does just what it say's in the title. It gives you all you need to know to get started using Evernote. Albert has done a good job at giving new users the lowdown on this software. It can be quite a challenge to take up a new way of organizing your data but Albert gives you the confidence to give Evernote a try. His guide was easy to read and understand with giving you enough to make your time well spent. This guide is a good read that I will vote 4 stars.

Kimmie and Me by Cherie Mitchell.

This is a true story set in Australia about a greyhound called Kimmie. Cherie Mitchell took Kimmie for fostering from the Greyhound Adoption Programme. This is not a cute picture book but a warts and all tale of fostering an adult dog.

I really enjoyed reading this book, the quality of writing is very high. Cherie takes the reader into her home and life as she adjusts to the new addition to her family. The relationship builds between Cherie and Kimmie, which makes for a lovely reading experience. Cherie includes all the dog habits displayed by Kimmie and many other breeds of dog. She explains the ups and downs of living with a Greyhound. Cherie goes into all the little details that make having a dog so much fun and very rewarding. For all the detail that Cherie provides as the days and weeks roll by, she does not repeat herself and pad out her book with variations of the same.

I do not have a Greyhound but our friends have and all the things Cherie has gone through are the same for them. This is not a picture book but you get such a strong impression of Kimmie from the sheer quality of Cherie's writing, that I can imagine her in my mind's eye.

This is a wonderful book that I loved from start to finish. I think that all dog owners will love this book. If you have never owned a dog, then after reading this book I am sure that you will understand the love and loyalty that an owner shares with their dog forever. Although this is a personal story, the writing is so good I am sure that Cherie could become a full time author. This is one of the best books I have read for a while, the structure and editing are spot on. The writing is top notch and I will vote it the top score of 5 stars. Her use of language is great and Cherie has introduced me to a new word. Whenever I walk my dog, he likes to have a good old sniff to check where other dogs have been. I did not have a word to describe this activity but Cherie has, your pet is simply checking - weemails - think about it!

100 Android Tips For Each of Jelly Bean 4.2, 4.3 & Kit Kat 4.4 by Saadat Wahid and Ahmad Wahid.

This short book will give the new user a great start with any Android device. The authors have written this guide to cover 3 versions of Android. Because of the scope of devices this guide applies to, you will understand the very core of Android. To cover 3 versions of Android is ambitious but the authors have done a very good job. This guide makes the reader think like a systems analyst as you learn the concept behind Android.

Each tip is introduced from the command line, followed by Jelly Bean 4.2, then Jelly Bean 4.3 and finally Kit Kat 4.4 - by which time you fully understand how the procedure works. This systematic approach gives the reader an understanding of Android from the ground up. You develop a love for the flavour and power of this amazing operating system.

The authors have done a good job and their guide is easy to understand. Their English and grammar give you the impression they are working in a call centre in India but this just adds to this book's charm! They explain that Android is the core operating system but that the device manufacturers alter Android to suit their product. Therefore the user should understand the core concepts of Android so that they can get the best out of any advice. Because of the skills employed by the authors, you come away from this guide understanding the framework of any Android device.

I enjoyed reading this book as it revealed the wonders of the Android universe. I think it is a good read that is far better than the trial and error used by many Android device owners. I think the authors deserve 4 stars for making life so easy for new Android users.

Jimmy's Game (Ruthless) by Karen Clow.

Jimmy likes a game of poker and one night he wins the game and claims the prize, not cash but Maria. Jimmy's Game is a thriller set in London featuring the lives of people involved in organized crime. This novel has plenty of sex and violence with the characters appearing like actors in the popular BBC soap opera EastEnders.

This is a fast paced novel that covers a fair bit of ground and a time frame of around 30 months. A lot of mainstream issues are raised like domestic violence, jealousy, religion and sexual aggression. The characters are developed steadily through the book and you learn the kind and loving side to these criminals. Most of the story is told through dialogue between the characters. it is more talk than action and description. The whole story is done in the EastEnders soap opera style. The main character is Jimmy and he does not appear to do an awful lot of work. He spends a lot of time on the telephone and has regular trips to his night clubs and restaurants where he drinks, eats and talks until the early hours.

Jimmy's Game is easy reading, although it has it's faults. This book is entertaining but in a let the television wash over me, kind of way. There is nothing special about this book but it is a good average. It does it's job as a daily read in the same way that many people devote time to Facebook and Twitter. The story line is easy to follow with a small circle of characters. I enjoyed reading Jimmy's Game, it is a good book that I will vote 4 stars. After all the violence, it has a happy ending.

Jimmy's Game is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2012.

Hidden by Derick Parsons.

Kate Bennett is a psychologist working in Dublin. Hidden is mystery thriller concerning secrets that are hidden for various reasons. Very slowly those secrets are exposed throughout this novel as the reader learns how people cope with past traumas in a variety of ways. Kate even takes on a new patient called Grainne, a very troubled teenager, although it is not until Chapter 7 - which is 20% into the story before you meet her.

Hidden is a good book that has plenty of clues thrown in along the way. You work through the 27 chapters and then have everything confirmed in the epilogue. Hidden is a book about how people think and cope with life. This is not a workplace drama as Kate has her own problems and history to deal with, Grainne is yet another challenge to her.

Hidden is an interesting read because it gets you to spot problems and understand people. You are entertained becuase each new character gives you doubts about their honesty and motives. The pace of the story is steady and covers a lot of ground. It has all the hallmarks of a good television drama. The delight is how you process the clues and imagine what lies behind the secrets. It does not matter how you interpret the clues, it is the fact that those clues fire your imagination.

I enjoyed reading Hidden and thought it was a good book that I will vote 4 stars. I feel that readers who enjoy the hugely successful Kathy Reichs forensic pathologist series of books, should also enjoy Hidden. For a debut novel, Derick has done very well and I look forward to his next book.

Nifty Fifty (Plus) Free Apps for the Kindle Fire by Edward Jones.

There are so many free apps for the Kindle Fire that Edward Jones has written this guide to possibly the best 50. As brief guides go, it serves a purpose. It gives a snapshot of what is available.

However, because the choice is huge and people differ so much, this guide could only point you in the right direction. It is not the best of guides to read and I think you would be better off spending your time trawling through the Amazon Apps Store and Google Play. This guide is a disappointment and although it may help novice users, to anyone who has used the internet before, it is nothing more than you can hear from your neighbour across the garden fence.

This guide is a POOR read and is nothing more than a pull out newspaper supplement, so I will vote it 2 stars.

This guide tells you all you need to know to start using a Kindle Fire HD. It is clearly written and very easy to understand. Ken talks you through the history of the Kindle Fire, what it can do and how to get the best from it.

I enjoyed reading this guide which very quickly told me what I wanted to know. By reading this guide you can decide if this is the right device for you to purchase. If it is then you will know exactly how to use it right out-of-the-box.

Ken has written a good user guide that I will vote as 4 stars.

I'm Used Abused & Paid (The Holiday Whoring Series) by Cindy Centurion.

This is a short story about a prostitute called Mae. She has a job with a punter who likes rough sex.

As short erotic stories go, this one is BAD. It is cheap writing and this short story is bundled as a teaser to Cindy's other work. Cindy sets the scene of Mae dressing up for her job as though she is describing a women's clothing catalogue. The encounter with the punter is mundane and the sex is vanilla. Oh! big deal, in the height of passion the punter grabs the prostitutes throat. No harm is done and Mae walks away with only 50% of her fee. Both the prostitute and the reader are short changed. This is a bad short story, all tease and nothing to recommend. This is a short story to AVOID and I vote it the minimum score of 1 star.

Going Underground by Chris Ward.

This short dystopian story is about Rob, who had heard rumours that trains continued running on the disused London Underground tube network. Rob finds a spot where he can sneak into a disused station and meets an old man to whom he explains his mission.

I did not like this short story as it did not grab me. I found it very dark and slow. There were only 2 characters in this tale and their dialogue was rather drab. Nothing sparked my imagination and I was not entertained. Chris has published this short story to try and lead readers onto his Tube Riders novels. Well, I will leave those trains in the depot!

I found reading Going Underground a chore. It never seemed to gather momentum and the ending was no big surprise. I will not be getting Tube Riders and I vote this sad little tale the minimum score of 1 star.

Evening Prayer by D. G. McIntosh.

Bill Braddock is a successful, top earning, high spending lawyer until things go badly wrong for him.

Evening Prayer is a tale of the plight of homeless people trying to survive day to day in America. It highlights the hidden problems of the homeless, a life that is unseen by most of the population. It shows just how easy it is to find yourself homeless through no fault of your own. It is not just the odd homeless guy that has taken a lifestyle choice to live on the streets but thousands of people thrown out of their homes into squalor. You will be surprised at the sheer numbers that go unseen living cheek by jowel in the prosperous cities. The homeless share a despair and lack of hope as they survive with no status or rights. This book really makes you appreciate your home and the security it provides. Evening Prayer is a gritty read with plenty of realism and a strong social message.

This book does get off to a rather slow start. I initially did not have any empathy for Bill as he was a big spending, money show off. The author has an obsession with describing furniture. A table is a table but to the author it has a certain type of wood, of various age and carved in a particular style. This obsession bored me but he does not care about proof reading or spelling. Trying to understand the typos decreased my enjoyment of this otherwise good book, so I will vote it 4 stars.

Durga The Warrior Goddess by Rhada Surya.

This little book is about a Goddess called Durga. It is a poorly written book with no structure and scripted in small paragraphs. It is a complete ramble and when I finished I was no better informed than before I started. This book makes no sense and I wonder why Rhada has bothered to publish it. Therefore I suggest you give this book the MISS and I will vote it just 1 star.

Durga The Warrior Goddess is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2012.

For the Brides of Gopalpur by Umme Raza.

This is an epic Indian short story about a wedding in Gopalpur some 600 years ago.  This work of fiction is narrative poetry with 4 lines to each verse. It is an odd little book because of it's structure and constant rhymes. I do not think that poetry works as a short story because the words have to have a musical rather than a story telling feel. You do enter a different and quite magical world, so this makes an okay coffee time read that I will vote with 3 stars.

For the Brides of Gopalpur is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2002.

Carnival Girl Lover by Soichiro Irons.

Carnival Girl Lover is a romantic erotica short story. Adrian meets Serena at a carnival and they have some fun together.

As short stories go, Carnival Girl Lover is not much fun. Soichiro writes clearly but there is nothing special about this tale. It is simple vanilla sex and nothing unusual happens. Character development is poor and the dialogue is ordinary. Carnival Girl Lover is a boring read and does not brighten up your day. It is about as much fun as reading a cookery book so I can only give it the bare minimum score of 1 star.

Carnival Girl Lover is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2011 and republished in 2014.

Against Her Will by Peter Martin.

Donna is walking to the train station when she is grabbed and violently raped. This novel follows her recovery from rape trauma.

Against Her Will is not a survivor tale told in the first person but a suspense thriller in which you wonder what may happen next. There is a lot of tension in this novel and Peter has made a creepy story as Donna tries to move on from her attack. This is a powerful story that fully describes the fear that Donna holds as she tries to rebuild her life. She views every man with suspicion and finds everyday living a great challenge. You pick up on her fear that lurking around the corner, her attacker may be watching her and ready to strike again. This fear and suspense continues until the very end of this novel.

Do not let the initial violent rape scenario put you off this novel. The rape just sets the atmosphere of mistrust that is crucial to the suspense of the book. Peter has taken a risk by using a taboo subject and including such a violent start to his novel. But this is a good suspense thriller that will not let you down. Peter has the knack of telling a creepy tale where you mistrust the central characters so much.

How can a book with such a violent start be such a good read? It is all down to the storytelling and the timing of those little clues. This is a suspense thriller that is gripping and therefore does it's job. Against Her Will is a thrilling read and makes for a good book that I will vote 4 stars.

Against Her Will is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2013.

Black Hat (Raven Children) by Kayla Al-Shamma-Jones.

Maeve is a 22 year old university student who has been given a pill by her room-mate Anne to help her study better. She takes just this one pill and suddenly things start to go wrong for her. Black Hat is a supernatural tale about a strange old man with big eyes who watches Maeve whilst wearing a black hat.

I suppose this novel is aimed at Young Adults as it highlights the dangers of taking drugs. It shows how just one pill of an unknown substance can wreck your life and maybe lose your sanity. Because it delves into the supernatural it loses any gritty urban realism. Black Hat is an easy read and provides a distraction. However, the entertainment value is POOR and this is not a fulfilling read. There is nothing special about this story and it did not provoke much interest for me.

It was hard to feel any empathy for Maeve as she has quite a spoilt little girl attitude. Her relationship with her parents is disrespectful and she can be rather rude to everyone. I did not find anything to like about this novel, so I can only vote it 2 stars.

Black Hat is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2012. This novel is Volume 1 of the Raven Children series. Volume 2 is called The Weeping Room and I shall not be bothered to download a copy.

Women Behaving Badly by Alana Munro.

This is an armchair psychology book about the dynamics of friendships shared between women. It explains how women relate to other women and the problems that can occur. Because some women can behave badly to other women and Alana reveals all.

I am pleased that Alana was brave enough to tackle this socially difficult subject. The stereotype of women is one of care, gentleness and motherly love. However women can become very jealous, intense, bitchy, competitive and play power games. Alana reveals the harsh truths about woman to woman (non-lesbian) relationships.

This book was aimed at women but as a married man for the past 22 years, I related to the analysis and tales that Alana gives the reader. I can see a lot of what Alana highlights in a lot of my wife's female friends. Women talk among themselves in a very different way to how men talk to each other.

Alana has a lenghty introduction to the conflicts between women and she waffles on quite a lot. Her book lacks editing and she takes many, many pages to say just a little. It is easy to understand but she does labour her points. When I finished reading this book it all made sense to me and I found it quite funny but childish how many adult women deal with their peers.

I found this book an okay read that explains why women so often fall out with each other. It will also help newly married men understand how women think so that they can have an easier time at home with their new wife. Alana puts a lot of padding into her book and she rants like a drunken friend, so I will vote it a middling score of 3 stars.

Women Behaving Badly is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2013.

Fifty Sheds Damper by C.T. Grey.

This is a parody of Fifty Shades of Grey and was written in 2013. It is a small novelty book intended for times when you wish to give a small present or stocking filler. It is full of innuendo and reads like a script for a stand up comedian. This is a small coffee table book with pictures on every other page. The volume of text is very low and is really a short story that takes around 40 minutes to read. It is all dressed up to look like a full length novel rather than the short story in a picture book it really is.

The humour is there and it is an amusing parody. This is not a brilliant read, it does not really entertain but simply amuses the reader. It is like watching a second rate comedian, you sit through it hoping it will improve. Sadly Fifty Sheds Damper does not get any better from the start. It is just a collection of brief, funny little jokes. To give you a taste, I will quote the best two jokes in the whole book. The writing does not get any better than this.

Our first session wasn't a great success. I asked her to come as Miss Whiplash so she turned up with a neck brace and a solicitor.

'I've been a very naughty girl,' she said, licking her lips. 'I need to be punished.' So I bought her the Daniel O'Donnell Christmas album.

Fifty Sheds Damper is a poor read and is just a novelty gift. Expect to see it on offer very cheaply in Pound shops. It is a simple rip off, trading on the success of Fifty Shades of Grey and I can only vote it 2 stars. I suggest you give this little book the Miss and give someone a better small gift like a pair of socks.

Tears from Kabul by Michael P. Buckley.

This novel is set in Kabul and features a murderous US Army soldier who will kill anyone in his path. His mission is to save some Afghan women who want an education and murder members of the Taliban along the way. This story is one of combat and there are numerous deaths along the way.
Tears from Kabul is written in the style of a shoot-them-up video game. It is all dramatic action with bullets and explosions going off left, right and centre. The story line is very weak, characterization is poor and the dialogue is snappy child's talk. The language used is very limited and will appeal to people with a reading age of 5.
I did not enjoy reading Tears from Kabul and thought it was nothing more than a violent children's story. Michael does not have the skills of a storyteller and his novel has the journalistic skills of a football match reporter for The Sun newspaper. This tabloid style of writing makes this a POOR read that I can only vote 2 stars.
l
Michael decided to publish his novel in 3 volumes, which you can read seperately or you can buy the boxed set. I downloaded book 1 of Tears for Kabul which has 4 chapters. I think he took this format so that he could give away the first 4 chapters as a free download in the hope that readers will purchase the rest of his story. Judging by book 1, I will not be wasting my money on books 2 and 3. I suggest you give ALL 3 books in the series the MISS. There are loads of good books out there with interesting and thought provoking stories about Afghanistan but this is NOT one of them.
Tears from Kabul is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2013.

The Ultimate Pug Guide: by Dexter Armstrong.

This brief guide, of only 268 locations on a Kindle, is a good introduction to anyone thinking of buying a Pug. The title is misleading as this brief guide is NOT ULTIMATE but a good start for people wanting to know more.

Dexter has written a lovely guide that is very easy to read and understand. The editing is spot on and although it packs a lot of information, you do not feel overwhelmed by the content. This guide gives you ALL you need to know before you buy a Pug. It is an honest guide, making you aware of the good and bad points of owning a Pug. The frustrations are dealt with and you are not mislead by a Pug's stubbornness.

Having had a Pug for 20 months now, I can vouch for what Dexter has written. Pugs are lovely little dogs who give a tremendous amount of love and loyalty back. I enjoyed reading this brief guide and consider it to be a good read that I will vote 4 stars. There is one thing that Dexter does not mention though. Pugs love to sleep on top of your bed, next to you, cwtch in and snore the night away by your side.

Special Girl by K. B. Stevens.

Special Girl is a short story about an intellectually challenged young woman. K.B. Stevens is big on teasing that his short story MAY be an erotic turn on but it is no more than an essay on disability awareness. It rambles on about what is appropriate and the morality of forming a relationship with a woman who has an intellectual disability.

This short story lacks depth and is just idle scene setting. The dialogue is puerile and the humour is rather weak. It is not an entertaining read and when I finished it, I thought I had wasted my time. I did not enjoy reading Special Girl and it was simply a distraction. A good short story will pack a punch but Special Girl fails to deliver. I hoped it would get better but it was disappointing from start to finish. Therefore I will vote Special Girl the minimum score of 1 star as there are good short stories out there but this is NOT one of them.

Special Girl is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2014.

Belonging by Sameem Ali.

This book is a true story first person narrative about a British Asian girl. It is a survivor tale that opens a world that is unseen to most of the British public. Follow Sameem as she grows up and is treated so horribly by people she should have been able to trust. This is a gripping story that deals with difficult cultural issues faced by British children of Pakistani parents.

This book is easy to read and understand. Sameem talks the reader through British Asian family life in the same way as she had to learn about her new family when she left the Children's Home. Sameem is frequently beaten and treated like a slave. At the age of 13, she is taken to Pakistan, forced to marry a complete stranger and 2 months later falls pregnant. As if things can't get any worse, Sameem returns to Britain and her abuse and torments continue. More drama happens but right at the end of her story, there is a happy ending.

I am pleased that Sameem has written and published her story. She is not alone and her circumstances are not unique. It is good that her tale is now in the public domain as nobody knows what goes on behind closed doors. Perpetrators of abuse are very good at hiding their actions from the public and know how to hit so it does not show.

I really enjoyed reading Belonging because it allowed me to enter a very private world. It was great to look at the world through the eyes of Sameem and learn about different cultural and family roles. I developed an empathy for Sameem right from the very start. She does not tell her story in a sweet, slushy way but in a frank, matter of fact manner. I felt that things could have been so very different if there had been a good follow up when Sameem left the Children's Home.

The editing of Belonging is very good and the story is told in a professional manner. You are not left with any gaps and everything makes sense. The timeline is strictly adhered to and the story does NOT have those annoying flashbacks found in so many books.

This book is so well written and is very easy to relate to. I am a 55 year old, white skinned English Atheist man, yet her writing is so good that I so easily dropped into the shoes of a brown skinned, British Asian/Pakistani Muslim girl. This shows the quality of her writing AND how this book should appeal to everyone. I read this book whilst on holiday and when I finished reading it I felt both refreshed and enlightened. For me there is only one vote I can give Belonging, the maximum score of 5 stars. Sameem has done well to survive her upbringing and when I read on page 280 that in May 2007 she was elected as a Labour Party councillor for Moss Side, Manchester, I thought "well done girl!".

Belonging was written in 2008 and has 281 pages.

Home by Manju Kapur.

Home is a 3 generation family drama set in Delhi involving a traditional cloth merchant. Follow the life of the Banwari Lal family as it changes with the times.

This novel starts off with the family tree and a brief synopsis of their family dynamics. This sets the reader off on the right foot and then, like a fly on the wall, you grow up with the family as you read through the chapters. This structure and writing style makes Home an easy read and you can imagine that you are growing up with them in Delhi.

Home is about family life with all it's ups and downs. It tells the story of fashion and the demands for clothing. Home tells a lot about the cultures living in North India, class, education and marriage. Because of it's strong local colour, the reader learns a lot about Indian life along the way. The story is told with a lot of love, in a mature, not a sugary sweet way. There is a lot of warmth in this book and you hope that everything turns out right for each and every member of the Banwari Lal family.

I got a lot of joy from reading this book. Manju's story telling is so good that you feel the story is actually unfolding around you rather than being a work of fiction. Her character development is top rate, you really get to know this family as though they were your own. The reading pleasure I got from Home was so high, that I vote it a HIT and the top score of 5 stars.

The flavour of this book also made me smile with it's use of witty dialogue. As an example the grandfather comments "Our customers are loyal to us, beta. If no one buys this ready-made, what will you do? Next year it will be a different fashion. Look at the sari - one size for everybody - no stitching, no tailoring, no fitting, no complaints, everything beautiful and simple."

Home was written in 2006 and has 337 pages.

The River Dark by Nicholas Bennett.

This is an odd novel set in the fictional Cotswold town of Measton. It centers on the dark events involving the river that runs through the town. This book is a mystery of the secrets that the river holds and the supernatural events that happen to the locals.

It is easy when I walk my dog along a river bank to day dream about the life, out of sight, that the river holds. This is the mood the reader must take as they plough through this very long novel. There is a lot of darkness in this book as very slowly the mystery begins to unfold. There are lots of characters involved in this story and it is easy to loose track of who is who.

Gradually the plot moves on from what you first thought was a regular crime thriller, through something creepy, then something supernatural to a nightmare of ghoulish proportions. My reading pleasure ranged day by day as I read through this book. At first I thought it was interesting, then a little slow with no progression. Slowly I got drawn into the mystery of the river and what dark secrets lay behind it's history. Then my interest waned somewhat as the story lost it's realism and it became a little bit of nonsense.

Overall this is a good book that captures your imagination as you dream of the possible secret world beyond the river. Rivers can be very creepy with many deaths taking place over the years with the victims taking their secrets to their watery graves. Some victims are never found and the mystery surrounding the river deepens.

Nicholas writes in an easy to understand British way with quite a lot of social commentary thrown in for good measure. The ending was a bit of a let down but the journey through the darkness of life around the river was a good one that I will vote 4 stars.

Atrocity Exhibition by Thohir Wijaya.

Here is a story of an art exhibition that feature scenes of many of the atrocities that took place in the 20th century. The author goes on a great length about how violent images can be sexualised and the effect they have on the public.

This is a very arty book and is full of interpretation, shade and texture. His book has been updated with many annotations that seek to explain the context of the exhibition.

I did not enjoy this book at all. I found it a drag and very, very easy to put down. I continued reading to the very end hoping I would find something good to write about it. But all I found was the most boring book I have ever read in my whole life. He drones on and on in a language I can't relate to. There is no real story to this book, just a rambling review of sexualised images. I took nothing away from this book at all and was glad I downloaded it as a freebie.

Books like this can so easily put off new readers and if all books were like this, I would throw my Kindle into the bin and never read another book in my life. Thankfully there are loads of good books out there that can entertain and inform the reader. Atrocity Exhibition does neither, which is why I am voting it the lowest possible score of 1 star. This is one boring book to AVOID.

Atrocity Exhibition was published in 2013 and is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook.

Pyramids by Kay Barrett.

Welcome to a London of the future and follow Dorothy, 30 years old, as she leaves the security of her parents home. London has changed over the years and a barrier has been erected to protect the Elite people inside. Pyramids is a dystopian thriller with a supernatural twist.

This novel is very good at setting the scene of life in a future Britain. It explores the British obsession with class and judging people by how they dress. It follows on from how our media and politics have changed in the last decade. Dorothy is rather naive but tries to discover her country's history since the Pact and what conspiracies are going on.

Pyramids is quite a slow story to read, with not a lot of action. It is a reflective tale of how a society could become. There are better dystopian thrillers out there and Pyramids is not an entertaining and fun read. All the characters simply muddle along and this is a very easy novel to put down. There is no WOW! factor to this story and you can read it with as much interest as your supermarket check-out receipt. This book is an okay read that simply fills the time, so I will vote it the middle score of 3 stars.

Pyramids is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2013.

On The Wind by Sarah Wilde.

This novella is based on a true story about a 41 year old homeless lesbian who leaves Los Angeles on a road trip. Madison has broken up with her girlfriend, is living in her Honda CRV and is on her way to see her mother in Arkansas. She meets 5 other lesbians in this story which has a happy ending.

This book is ideal light holiday reading although it deals with serious issues like society's intolerance of homosexuality and narcissistic parents. On The Wind is easy reading and is told in a soft, loving style. There is no sex in this story, it is NOT an adult erotic thriller with steamy girl on girl action. Sarah writes with a warmth about finding love, a home and acceptance. She has a lovely clear writing style that simply flows as her story soothes and washes over you.

I enjoyed reading On The Wind and found it bright, intelligent and refreshing. You do not need to be a Lesbian or a Woman to enjoy this story. It is all about being human and wanting to have a home, be loved and being a worthy part of society. Sarah is an author to watch and I enjoyed her book so much that I will vote it 4 stars.

On The Wind is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2014.

The Nothing by Kenneth Horowitz.

America is plunged into chaos when suddenly all wireless connections are broken. All mobile phones, radio, television and wi-fi internet connections are down. America has to adapt to The Nothing.

This book raises the issues of how life has changed as we become more addicted to our mobile devices. People spend so much of their time playing with mobile phones and tablets. Rather than spending time together, brief soundbites are shared on Facebook and Twitter.

How will America cope and will a hero step forward to restore wireless connections? This is the problem with this book. Kenneth's characterizations are very good and the reader spends a lot of time with the background of each character. But then the chapter you are reading finishes and another character is richly introduced. The story moves on in such a way that you think those characters will never be heard of again, yet nobody comes foward to restore wireless connections. The lack of focus within the storyline makes this novel a frustrating read. Once you think a character is finished, up they pop again but you are still no further forward.

Clearly this book has not been proof-read and the numerous typos are very irritating. So the story continues and I got the impression that Kenneth had lots of ideas, almost in the form of short stories, that he tries to weave into a full length novel. But the links between each character and the plot are minor. The Nothing is an okay read but there are plenty of better dystopian thrillers out there. Therefore I can only vote this book 3 stars as it passes the time but is low on entertainment and reader enjoyment. The final ending did make me laugh though!

The Nothing is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2013.

MOBIUS (crime thriller books) by Ann Abrams.

Katherine and Nick go to special parties where anything can happen. Special rules apply and it is a mystery as to who is involved and how extreme the parties become. MOBIUS is a strange novel set in Britain and has an odd mix of characters. There is quite a lot of sex involved, with plenty of BDSM. When things started to go wrong, I thought this novel would follow the lines of a regular crime thriller but I was wrong.

MOBIUS is all about sexuality and society. It explores how people fit in and what drives them sexually, how public opinion is formed and special interest groups work. Fans of Dan Brown should enjoy MOBIUS as there is mystery involving pseudo-religion, rituals, secret societies and symbols. This is an enjoyable novel that you can escape into and at the end you come back into reality as Katherine uses her Oyster card and travels onboard a Transport for London bus. Only you are left thinking, "I wonder if these underground rituals do take place under my nose as London goes about it's daily business".

Ann has written a good novel with plenty of detail to make it real. It is an intellectual read with plenty of depth. This story is about a lot more than a kiss and a cuddle. The plot did not develop in the way I expected but it was a pleasure to read. MOBIUS is a good read if you are looking for escapism and I will vote it 4 stars.

MOBIUS is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2012.

Leisa's Journey by Rose Mary Perino.

This very short story is about Leisa, a 13 year old girl whose parents have the odd row at home. Rose Mary Perino is a new author trying to become a writer and is using this brief story to showcase her talent.

Novels are all about taking the reader on a journey away from their armchair. To make this journey a pleasant and enjoyable read, the author MUST be a good storyteller and have a GREAT plot woven within the text. Sadly, Leisa's Journey reads like an incident report where the child is petitioning for the divorce of her parents. This story is not told in a gripping manner and I did not develop an empathy for Leisa. The plot is shallow and the ending is not special. There are no highlights in this script which reads like a report of a football match.

I think that Leisa's Journey is a POOR read and I will be voting it just 2 stars. Rose has had a go at writing a short story but I can see NO SPECIAL talent in her script. It is often said that there is always a book in everyone but I suggest that Rose does not give up her day job.

Leisa's Journey is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2013.

Kiss Me, Evil by Blackie Noir.

Nicky is an American boxer who has health problems and needs to retire from the sport. Only problem is Trina, his wife of 16 years who wants him to keep earning the big money. Nicky is not the shrewdest of characters and he makes many errors of judgement.

This story shows the worst in people and is quite violent in places. No character is likeable, they all have a nasty side. Nicky comes across as rather dumb but the articulate and wide range of vocabulary used is at odds to his persona.

Kiss Me, Evil is not an entertaining read, I found it a bit of a drag. I did not have an empathy for Nicky as he was a bit of a fool. Everybody played him for their own ends. This novel was a disappointment for me and did not offer much pleasure. The highlights were the sections involving motorcyles and biker culture. There was a lot of criticism of women, detailing all the scheming and back stabbing they can do against men.

This first person narrative was first written and published in 2007 under the title Open Wound. Blackie Noir has rewritten this novel in 2013, calling it Kiss Me, Evil. Why the author chose to revise this novel is beyond me. Books should give the reader a lot of pleasure and Kiss Me, Evil is a poor read. If this novel is an improvement over Open Wound, then I hate to imagine how bad the first draft actually was! I found Kiss Me, Evil so lacking in giving the reader pleasure, that I can only vote it 2 stars as this is a story to give a MISS.

The Jewish Neighbor by A.M. Khalifa.

In this short story, Umayma is a young wife who has just moved from Syria and is now living in London. She has fled the civil war in Syria only to experience other terrors in Britain. Follow Umayma as she tries to make a new life in London away from the many horrors in the Middle East.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this short story. A. M. Khalifa writes with such passion to make such a colourful and powerful story. Strongly featured are the 3 things your parents always told you never to discuss with strangers, sex, politics and religion. But these 3 controversial issues are integral to this story. The Jewish Neighbor has a host of content to give you the full look and feel of Umayma's experiences. This is a griity story, with plenty of action and realism. You get the full picture including some racism woven into the story. It is a story that makes you think and challenge assumptions.

I was really impressed with the quality of A. M. Khalifa's writing. He is articulate and writes with a full vocabulary in a very educated and informed manner. His story was simply a pleasure to read and at the end I wanted more of the same. To have all these current day issues woven into the one story was very good indeed. He even included another favourite of mine, a description of the Middle Eastern food that Umayma was cooking! There is some romance in this story and it has a happy ending. For me there is only one score I can vote this story, the top score of 5 stars.

The Jewish Neighbor is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2014.

I Am Mutton Dressed As Lamb by Sarah Millward.

Meet Marie, a 49 year old woman who likes to have a good time. This Amazon Kindle eBook is a short adult erotic tale told in the first person. Marie is frankfully honest in her sexual desires and enjoys being used, abused and humiliated. She is a masochist and does not find her age a problem. No matter what people call her, she is there for the sex no matter how degrading the acts may appear.

I enjoyed reading this short story because it is told in an articulate, educated and knowledgable way. Sarah Millward understands a full range of sexual desires shared between men and women. Although locations are anonymous, the language Sarah uses is so British that I guess the action takes place in a UK city.

I Am Mutton Dressed As Lamb is a wonderful short story that delights the reader because of it's realism. There are many women today in Britain who want a good time with no strings attached. They want sex as a recreational activity that they can play as a game knowing that they can enjoy another game at another location next week.

The quality of Sarah's writing gave me so much pleasure as it is way above the standard of most adult erotic literature. Her editing is first class and her content is dynamic, with no padding to bulk her story out. She has written a very good short story, that had me on the edge of my seat. I will be looking out for more stories from Sarah as her writing is so good and I shall vote this tale the top score of 5 stars.

People underestimate the speed at which our brains and eyes operate. So follow the advice in this guide and understand how to process the text in front of you. Change your focus on reading and your speed will shoot up straight away. You will wonder why you were not taught this skill at school and why you had not thought of it before.

How To Read Fast is an easy guide to read and it is worth spending your time on. In this digital age we are all impressed by barcode scanners in supermarkets and how quickly computers can process text. We do forget that with a little bit of training our brain and eyes can also read words really fast. I enjoyed reading this short guide and took so much away from it, that I will vote it 4 stars.

The Gazing Doll by Zafar Nizami and Alam Nizami.

This is a short horror story that focuses on the concept of a hometown. One man did not understand this concept until he stumbled across a little girl, watched over by a gazing doll.

This short story has a strong atmosphere and you feel as though you are there. It is a very creepy tale that lingers in your mind after you have finished it. The dialogue is small but the feelings are strong, so you get the full picture. It is a story that is easy to relate to because everyone gazes up at windows and imagines what tales they can tell.

The Gazing Doll is a refreshing coffee time read that takes you quickly into a sinister world. It is not wonderful but is an okay read that I will vote 3 stars.

All the details in this lengthy article.

The Natural Arthritis Cure.

The Natural Arthritis Cure: The Ultimate Arthritis Diet For You To Cure Arthritis by Andrew Jackson.

This short 1064 KB eBook guide was written in 2014 and is an easy read about some treatments for Arthritis. It takes the reader through the different forms of arthritis explaining very well the causes. It then goes on to suggest alternative treatments that can help sufferers of Arthritis. These are not perscription drugs but hot or cold treatments and a herb called Devil's Claw, whose active ingredient is iridoid glycosides. Other substances to try are Gamma-linolenic Acid or Boswellia.

This guide is an okay self help book. The introduction and explanation of arthritis is very good and is easy for the lay man to understand. However, the title of this guide suggests that the alternative treatment is some big involved diet that is hard to adopt and you will have a lot to study. But all this guide does is suggest some tried and tested hot and cold treatments with the taking of a herb.

Andrew has talked up his short guide by giving it a BIG title but it is an okay read that I will vote 3 stars as it sheds light on a condition that affects millions of people around the world.

Fetid Feet by Adria Austin.

Kim goes to a party in this short adult erotic story. Kim loses her shoes and is turned on by the feelings aroused walking around barefoot. There is a long build up to the point when Kim is barefoot and the sexy action begins.

As adult erotic tales go, Fetid Feet is not the best. Adria sets the party preparation and scene very well but it is not a thrilling read. The feelings brought on about being barefoot are well described but the sex with both men is vanilla.

There are far better short stories around and Fetid Feet is a disappointment. It brings nothing to the fetish scene, so I will only vote it 2 stars. There is a skill to writing a good short story, adult erotic or otherwise but Fetid Feet is a poor read. Fetid Feet is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2014.

Twitter: Guidelines, Use and Tips for Marketing and Networking by Stefanie Oberhansley.

This eBook written in 2012 is a concise guide to using Twitter. It covers everything you need to know to get the very best out of Twitter. It is very easy to follow and Stefanie explains everything in a very clear manner. When you get to the end of this guide you understand the power, scope and limitations of Twitter. Stefanie outlines the good and bad things about Twitter and admits it is not for everyone. She is very honest about Twitter use and does not make it out to be the next best thing since sliced bread.

This is a great guide on Twitter to read as it will give you the knowledge to make an informed choice over whether to devote your time to this social media platform. I enjoyed reading this guide so much that I will vote it the top score of 5 stars.

Cafe Insomniac by Mark Capell.

Justin is 25 years old and was a teacher until he lost his job due to his insomnia. What job can Justin do that will fit in with his sleeping problems? He decides to open an all night cafe to cater for fellow insomniacs, shift workers and other night owls.

Cafe Insomniac is a first person narrative and Justin's cafe is in a British city. Follow Justin as he launches his new business and tries to make it succeed. Justin meets many people and there are problems along the way.

This novel showed great promise as Mark Capell is a very articulate author. He uses a very large vocabulary and describes at great length British life, cafe culture and sleeping problems. Mark has the ability to write clearly and with great class.

Although his writing is good, I found this story bad. I think the storyline is unrealistic as nobody would open a cafe just for nights and have it closed during the day. Nothing much happens in this novel as Justin casually chats to a small group of characters. I did not develop an empathy for Justin as he was just a dreamer without a good head for business. So Justin has lucid and very powerful dreams giving the reader the option to decide whether these episodes are dreams or reality. This is no big deal as ALL novels are the dreams of the author and to write a book highlighting the difference between dreams and reality is rather childish.

Cafe Insomniac is set in a British city but it is never named and its location is kept a secret. No road or building names are used, so you can not identify a location. This is not an enjoyable read, it is a drag and involves a tremendous amount of small talk. It is not a good novel because it lacks a believable or interesting plot. This is such a poor read that I can vote it only 2 stars.

Cafe Insomniac is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2013.

Beyond the Darkness (Suffering in Silence) by Susan M. Smith.

This novel is a depiction of a girl's growing up in Arkansas from the age of 4 to 16. Kayla has problems at home including rape, incest, mental and physical abuse. Follow Kayla as she deals with family members, her mother's boyfriends and many house moves. The aim of this novel is to assure young girls that they are not alone in their problems, they do not have to suffer in silence and there can be a light at the end of their very dark tunnel.

This book is a first person narrative and is an easy read. It shows the world as viewed from Kayla's eyes with her childhood innocence. The story ticks along okay as Kayla develops from a child into a woman. Her story does appear quite run of the mill as Susan ticks off all the boxes as she writes about the scheduled issues. There is a lot of warmth and love in this story as a hope builds that things will work out okay for Kayla. You develop an empathy for Kayla as she matures.

The bad things that happen to Kayla are described with great care so as not to upset young readers. Her problems are told in a matter of fact way that does not talk up her victim status. She does not come across as a special kid, just your regular girl next door. It is this ordinariness that is so appealing in this book. Yet this same high level of common ground does let this book down a little as it is a mediocre read. Susan's writing is fine and she gets the story across. But this novel is nothing special and being just an okay read, I will vote it 3 stars.

Eyes in the Window by John Meany.

This short story features a couple having a short vacation in a cabin in Michigan. Like all married couples, they have their ups and downs and a short break away could help them. That is asuming there are no problems with their accomodation. Someone or something could be outside stalking them.

This short story is crisp with just the right amount of detail to get you interested. The plot and pace are good with a carefully worded twist. As a coffee time read, this short story hits the spot. It is interesting and quick to move on. You form your own opinion of the couple very quickly in the same way as guests on the Jeremy Kyle television show. This short story is a good read and gives you a refreshing break, so I will vote it 4 stars.

Eyes in the Window is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2013.

Drenched by Caroline Maria Mendes.

Leora is an 18 year old girl staying at her grandparents home in Lavallette, New Jersey. She is enjoying her holiday when things start to go wrong when there is the murder of a young girl on the beach and Leora worries she could become the next victim. But Leora is no ordinary girl down below as things are growing and she is blossoming into a mermaid.

Drenched is a first person narrative and it is Caroline's debut novel. This 486 KB Amazon Kindle eBook was written in 2013 and has an easy, light reading style. It is like reading a popular woman's magazine called Take A Break. Drenched mixes fashion, mystery and romance in a popular women's fiction manner.

I found this novel lacking, with a very weak plot. Jesse provided the romance and Leora was given loads of designer clothes to wear, whilst taken out to dinner with no expense spared. Leora did not have to do a thing but look pretty as everything was paid for by Jesse. She did not pay her way at all and I did not develop an empathy for her.

There was not much for me to enjoy about this novel. Leora would find more new clothes given to her, she would have yet another shower, get dressed and do her hair. Yes, not the most exciting of novels, woman gets washed and dressed - yawn! For all the money Jesse spent on Leora, she did not engage in any sex in return. Leora the freeloader just lapped up the good times whilst being treated like royalty.

The hunt for the murderer was child's play and the story had a happy ending. If this story was intended for children, then there is nothing to upset them in this tale of nonsense. I expect children will get as bored as I did with Drenched as Leora went for yet another shower, costume change and hair do.

Caroline may have the ability to write short magazine stories but her debut novel is poor. It lacks content and is rather bland. Drenched is such a weak and shallow story, that I can only vote it 2 stars.

Whiplash by Yvie Towers.

This novella is a first person narrative about Lily, a 24 year old Negro slave girl. It is historical fiction set in America in the days of horses and carts. There is plenty of back story as this book starts off with a prologue about when Lily was 8 years old and growing up with her sister Mercy.

Whiplash is a very moving story about slavery in America and how people were bought and sold just like dogs are today. Puppies will look up at you hoping that they will be able to trust you and give them a good home rather than be mistreated like other dogs they have heard about in the kennel. These Negro slaves also hoped they would be lucky.

Life was hard for Lily as she was just a number and was called "Number 10" by her master. Lily went through many painful experiences as she was bought not to work the land or be a household help but to become a whore in a new brothel. Yes, Whiplash is a gritty novel with it's share of rough sex and violence.

Whiplash is a thrilling story that is simply a joy to read. Yvie Towers has the knack of telling a great story which is full of colour and explores the culture of those times. All her characters are well developed and such a vivid picture is painted in your mind, you could imagine you were there. The story is told in a mature way with a great and very full use of language. This is an exciting read, with wonderful editing and no dull bits or padding. Her writing is very good and Yvie Towers is a new author to watch. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Whiplash and I will vote it the top score of 5 stars. Readers of a nervous nature will be pleased to know that this book has a happy ending.

If by any chance, you saw the title Whiplash and the words "slave girl" thinking this could be an adult erotic BDSM story with some casual racism thrown in, you will NOT be disappointed. Either way, have the tissue box close to hand.

Whiplash is available as a KB Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2013.

Under a Broken Sun by Kevin P. Sheridan.

This novel is a first person narrative set in the present day when without warning the Earth is thrown into chaos. All of a sudden technology stops and anything powered by electricity, mains or battery plus all engines stop. All motor vehicles grind to a halt and planes crash out of the sky. Mobile phones stop working, the internet is down and all radio and television are silent. The sun is unbearably hot as the Earth heats up and people think it is the end of the world. Can 23 year old Adam Dawson live through this strange disaster or will he die with the rest of mankind?

Under a Broken Sun is an okay read as you follow Adam's quest to travel to Chicago where his father claimed he would be safe. Adam's character is well developed for all his strengths and weaknesses. Adam is a cutter and his self harm is compassionately explained.

This novel has a credibility weakness because although climate change could be the end of our world, the possibility of ALL electricity and engines suddenly stopping simply would NEVER happen. But this book does plod along and you can enjoy it for what it is, a mediocre 3 star read.

Under a Broken Sun is available as an 2234 KB Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2013.

Text Message by William Malmborg.

Mallory and her sister Jenna are shopping in a Chicago mall. They separate whilst shopping and Mallory receives a text message from Jenna's phone. Mallory has a choice, ignore the message, phone the Police or play the game. She chooses to play the game and this rollercoaster of a thriller starts.

Text message is all about a sadistic game played within a shopping mall. It is a fast moving thriller set in a short time frame, less than 8 hours. I liked the structure when each new chapter was from the viewpoint of another of the 3 central characters within the same time frame. You get the actions and thoughts of Mallory, a security guard called Dan and Mr Edwards the sadistic game master. Although the pace is fast, there is plenty of back story on each character so you can get a handle on what drives each person. The tasks that Mr Edwards sets for Mallory to play are a sexy challenge and the punishment for failing is very sadistic.

I really enjoyed reading Text Message, it gave a lot of pleasure and I think it would make an exciting film. This is an entertaining read and the games Mr Edwards wants Mallory to play will make most men smile with desire. Women readers may find the games creepy or embarrasing though.

William sets the scene of the shopping mall very well and captures the mood of all the people working there. I have often wondered if things other than shopping is going on in the background within shopping malls. Now whenever I hear a text message notification sound, I will wonder if another game is taking place. Text Message is a very good read and I vote it the top score of 5 stars.

Text Message is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook of 658 KB and was written in 2011.

Skinny Little Black Girl by Rev. Yemaja Sekhmet-Maat.

This book is a first person narrative of a young woman born during the 70's in Stirchley, Birmingham. The author was formerly known as Josephine Mintah and she has written this book for her own peace of mind. Skinny Little Black Girl is a survivor's tale of rape, alcohol and drugs.

This tale highlights the problems many girls have growing up, troubles at home and forming relationships while their hormones are raging. This book showed great promise as Josephine started to make her way in life with many mistakes along the way. She got older with more problems and mistakes along the way. With one setback after another her story rolled along. Because this is a survivor's tale, it has a happy ending as Josephine changes her name to Yemaja. I am pleased that she has managed to turn her life around after some very bad experiences in her younger years.

Skinny Little Black Girl is not a good book to read. I thought Yemaja rambles on an awful lot and her story lacks focus. It is like having an over long conversation with a drunken woman who insists on telling you her life story. There is little structure to this book and lacks editing to make the story clear. Her story lacks depth and this is quite a shallow tale of an ordinary girl having an ordinary life.

I did not really enjoy this book as I did not find it entertaining. There were no bits where I thought "this is good!". I did not develop an empathy for Yemaja as she stumbled from one mistake to the next. The sections involving sex, alcohol or drugs were not exciting and were rather tame. Nothing in this book would offend your grandmother. Some chapters were very brief as these were stand alone chapters of peotry. These poems made no sense to me and I found their inclusion a nuisance and a waste of my time.

I found Skinny Little Black Girl lacking in action. depth and quality of writing. Yemaja lacks the ability to tell a good story and her book left me cold. I read books for pleasure and this book failed to amuse me, so I will give it the minimum score of 1 star.

Skinny Little Black Girl is available as an Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2013.

A Proper Stranger by Nicola Ducane.

This novella is an adult erotic tale about sex with a stranger. Monika reads a post on Craigslist about a man seeking to share writing a sexy tale. Monika responds to his post and their relationship develops. Although this is a first person narrative, because you read the emails from the stranger to Monika, you understand how both adults feel and what turns them on. You get both sides of this fantasy, which makes for a great read.

This story is well written and explores the way one adult is attracted to another. Nicola describes the courtship between 2 people and how each person builds on the others input. This is a mature erotic story, told in an articulate and educated fashion. The fantasy of sex with a stranger runs from the virtual writing between Monika and the stranger to a face to face meeting. This whole scenario is told with style and makes for an enjoyable read. The desire that unfolds is very powerful and you are left in no doubts how the characters feel and the pleasure they enjoy. A Proper Stranger is a good read that has class and I vote it 4 stars.

A Proper Stranger is available as a 176 KB Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2013.

Regenge by Bill Ward.

Tom Ashdown stumbles across the kidnapping of a famous American actress shopping in London. He becomes a hero in saving Melanie Adams but then other people are intent on seeking revenge. This novel is a crime thriller that centers on the need of some people to seek revenge.

Revenge is a well crafted novel with good back stories and strong character development. Bill's writng style is similar to Robert Fisk's as his characters describe the troubles in Northern Ireland. The plot and pace of this book is good. It builds like a jigsaw with each character having an integral part to play.

Revenge is an easy and entertaining book to read. It is a full story where you feel you are living with the characters as you pick it up again for another session. I got drawn into how each character planned and executed their own act of revenge. It was all done sneaky so that they would not be found out.

The ending was a little like a Dan Brown best seller but by then Bill had ticked all the boxes for a good crime thriller with some conspiracy thrown in for good measure. Revenge is a good read and I vote it the top score of 5 stars. This is Bill's first novel and he plans to publish his second in 2014, I'll look forward to that.

Revenge is available as a 1499KB Amazon Kindle eBook and was written in 2013.

Shih Tzu: Pictures of the Shih Tzu by Missy Robbins.

This is a small photo book of just 26 pages dedicated to the Shih Tzu breed of dog. These photos wlll make you smile as these dogs are very cute looking. There is no information or story in this book, it is simply a collection of photos. Nice photos but that does not make it a good book. This is more like a calendar without the dates. The value of this book is poor and you would be better off buying a calendar. As a book about Shih Tzu dogs this is a fail and I will vote it the minimum score of 1 star.

This book is available as a 2305 KB Amazon Kindle eBook and was published in 2013.
